The Federal Revenue Service requires that Bonded Areas have an automated system to control the entry, storage, and exit of goods.

The Bonded Area system controls:

- The entry and exit of people at the site;
- The entry, movements, stay, and exit of goods;
- The entry and exit of vehicles at the premises or site, or the docking and undocking of vessels and aircraft for sites with their own dock or landing strip;
- Entry and exit of cargo at the site;
- Storage of goods differentiating unitizes, un-unitized, and bulk cargo, customs regimen, foreign, nationalized, domestic, and abandoned goods, finished products industrialized in the premises, and any other situation for which the customs regulation requires specific control or handling; and
- Issues the reports required by the Federal Revenue Service according to their Declaratory Act.
